Bonus Art: Great Blue Heron Sunset

Another piece from my trip to Corpus Christi… this Great Blue Heron came in for a landing right at sunset. We were sitting on the dock admiring the view when he swooped in.

Fill and Fuel: Back Roads, Texas

Found this little gem by the side of a road I travel all the time… don’t know why I never noticed it before.

West Texas Sunset (Back Roads, Texas)

I shot this image a while back and only just took the time to retouch it. I loved the way the colors came out… and really loving my Canon G11.

Bluebonnets in Marlin, Texas

On one of our road trips, we found this scene… the bluebonnets were actually growing up through a crack in the sidewalk in front of this post office..

New Treatment on Archive Photo

I went looking for this photo in my archive and didn’t like the treatment I’d given it several years ago, so I wanted to revamp it for my Back Roads, Texas series. The history behind this old bank building must be fascinating…

Road Trip! (New Images for My Texas Series)

Took a drive the other day.. the old gas station in the first few was the real target, but we stopped along the way to grab some of these others that will go in the new, revamped Texas series soon..

And proof that angle and treatment can make all the difference …

Snow Days

Our crazy winter weather this season continued last week. I’ve lived in the Dallas/Fort Worth area for 25 winters now and its rare for us to have more than 2 winter events (ice or snow) in a season. Snowfall itself is rare, usually only falling after a sheet of ice falls first – and even then, its only a dusting – maybe as much as an inch. The last real snow (before this season) we had was on Valentine’s Day in 2004 – the same year as The Fish Creek Project where we had 3 or 4 inches.

I’ve lost count of how many times its snowed .. real snow, not ice .. this season. Last Thursday, we had 9 1/2 inches in one day. The total for the storm (Thursday into Friday morning) was 12 inches. Both numbers shattered previous records, making the totals the highest ever recorded for a single day and a single storm. I hear tell we are only a little bit shy of an all time winter record as well.

Of course, you want to see pictures… that’s why you’re here. All of these except the Fish Creek Trail were done in the morning after it had been snowing for only 5 hours. I had no idea at the time how much we were going to get before it was over. The Fish Creek Trail image was done after 12 hours of snow.

This one was also shot in the morning. I almost didn’t shoot it because I had made an image of the same scene in 2004, but I’m glad I did. The 2010 shot is first, followed by the 2004 shot. Its kind of cool to compare….

Coastal Vacation Part 3: The Rest

These are the images from my trip to the coast that didn’t seem to fit into the other categories.. but I still wanted to share.

This “sand castle” is a giant sculpture that makes up the side of a tourist gift shop that faces the main road through Corpus Christi and onto the Island.

This crab was having a great time sitting in the surf and shoveling things into his mouth every time a wave washed over him. He was about 4 or 5 inches across, so he was good size.

No, we didn’t really find a treasure chest.. we actually staged this for another purpose (more on that later).. but I liked this one.

A couple of sand dollars.. one broken, one not

Lastly, I put these three images together as a nice little triptych.. thought it worked really well in B&W.. there is a color version, too.. as well as the individual images.

Coastal Vacation Part 2: Landscapes

I already posted the great sunset shot from early in the week last Friday, but here are a few others that I really enjoyed.

Even though I was on vacation, I did get up one morning to catch the sunrise over the Gulf of Mexico. Lost a contact on the beach, though.. that was no fun, but found a nice lady at the mall who helped get me a replacement right away.

Loved the way the sun was shining through this palm frond..

Enjoyed this great silhouette of a couple playing with their dog at sunset.

I pointed my camera at breaking waves a bunch of times over the week and captured this on one of the last days. Its a lot more challenging than it looks to get a great wave shot.

We had major fog for a day and a half of the trip, so I used it to my advantage capturing this image of the historic line camp inside the Padre Island National Seashore (a national park just south of where we stayed).

Coastal Vacation Part 1: Wildlife

As you probably already know, my wife and I got a much needed vacation last week down to Corpus Christi, TX – North Padre Island to be exact. Of course, I take the camera everywhere and it was the perfect opportunity to add some art pieces with a coastal feel to the collection.

This is the first set of the best images from the trip.. the wildlife: birds and deer

Black Skimmer

Six Point Buck

Royal Tern

Brown Pelicans
