Diving Back Into First

Another baseball image this week from a recent Grand Prairie Air Hogs game. Utility player Cody Merrill dives back into first base to avoid a pickoff throw.

New Workshop – On Location Lighting

Saturday, August 22, 2009
2-5pm (longer if needed)
On Location Lighting

This class is about how to create portraits with the light you have available to you in new and creative ways. Emphasis will be on using lighting equipment you already own and “finding light” on location. Students are encouraged to bring any flashes and/or modifiers (reflectors, diffusers, etc.) to class.

During the lecture, we will discuss how to look at light creatively – using knowledge of your camera and exposure to control the entire scene. We will cover reflectors and diffuser panels, as well as on and off camera flash (including Strobist methods) with and without gels.

After the lecture, we will use both your equipment (and sometimes my Strobist kit) to demonstrate. This way, students will get to see a variety of devices in use. A laptop will be set up so we can download images immediately to discuss and critique.. and then modify by shooting again with different setups.

Cost: $99 per Student
This class is limited to 7 students total.
Location: 360 Studios (Mostly indoors, some outdoors, but A/C available so we don’t get too hot.)

Brandon Carter

The other night at the Grand Prairie Air Hogs game, I decided to try and grab shots of the batters from up close while they were in the on deck circle.. I had some very interesting results and some great emotion as they were putting on their game faces and thinking about what they were going to do next. This one of Short Stop Brandon Carter caught my attention.. not just for the expression, but for the reflection of the stadium and stands in his helmet.

Feet – I ♥ Faces

The category this week is feet.. but I didn’t know if I should submit this as adult or kid, for obvious reasons. This was shot at a wedding a while back.. I’ve tried to duplicate it several times, but this is still the best one of all of those attempts.

I titled it “Dance With Me, Daddy”

Up and Coming Model – Tyrone

Tyrone is a new model in the Dallas/Fort Worth area. We did some headshots and a few images for his modeling portfolio. He’s got some real talent.

I do modeling portfolios through TXHeadshots.com

Recent Headshot Work

I spent a long day Saturday doing headshots for actors out on location.. and used a Strobist setup for the entire day – similar to what I described in this previous post. There is a special knack to good headshots, especially for actors.. I think it may be my favorite kind of photography, trying to capture just the right look from someone in a head and shoulders shot…

This little doll’s name is Kelly.. she is Chinese (mother) and Irish (father) and has the coolest freckles across her cheekbones and the bridge of her nose

And to give you an idea of what we try to produce in a three look session for an actor… here is the same actor (Brent) with three different looks shot the same day

Anything Goes (Pets) – I ♥ Faces

For this week’s pets category at I ♥ Faces, I thought I’d submit this flamingo I did at the zoo. I think his posture and pose puts him just shy of being an awesome James Bond villian… seriously, look at this image and say to yourself in your most threatening voice…

“Before I kill you, Mr. Bond….”

Sports in Action – I ♥ Faces

One of this week’s themes at I ♥ Faces is “Sports in Action” so I pulled out this image from a recent Air Hogs game against the Cats. JB Tucker sliding into home.. safe.. note the baseball that has gotten away from the catcher.. up onto his back. Love the catcher’s panicked expression.

Update.. and it finished in the top 10 for the week.. Yay!

Professional Series – Nurse Brandi

I needed to add some additional images of people in their normal work clothes to my headshots portfolio, so Brandi came in to the studio with her nurse’s scrubs.

I have the portable equipment now that allows me to even go out on site to capture images like these, so I will be able to serve hospital staff, lawyers, realtors, doctors.. really anyone with busy schedules that prevents them from coming to me at the studio.

My 14 Year Old Daughter Using Small Flash Lighting

I finally got the rest of the stuff I wanted for my three light strobist setup this week.. so I coerced my daughter into coming into the studio to help me test it all out together…. after fiddling with individual lights, adding and subtracting, I brought them all together…

Meagan

Powered by two Vivitar 285HVs .. one in an umbrella, one in a softbox.. both with Microsync receivers (thanks Debbi!) and a third ancient Vivtar flash with an orange gel for a background light on an optical trigger.

Pulled back..
