Crossroads – Ben Hur, TX

I took some time today to go through some images I’ve had for a while but not taken the time to process… this is a new gas station for my Back Roads, Texas series.. found in Ben Hur, TX (yes, that is a real place).

Open House – July 10

We are happy to announce that we have changed locations! And in true Texas fashion, we’re having a BBQ!

The new place is huge.. 2200 square feet, with more than half of it going to support her business (the KnittingFairy Studio). This has still left me with a sizable chunk for photography, though.. and a very usable space at that.

We are doing it right this time and having an Open House to celebrate on July 10. We will have food and drinks and be offering tours from noon to 5.

If you’re on this side of town, please feel free to drop by!

(Note, if you are trying to put the address into a GPS, make sure you tell it STATE highway 360.. otherwise, it may not find us.)

Fill and Fuel: Back Roads, Texas

Found this little gem by the side of a road I travel all the time… don’t know why I never noticed it before.

West Texas Sunset (Back Roads, Texas)

I shot this image a while back and only just took the time to retouch it. I loved the way the colors came out… and really loving my Canon G11.

Bluebonnets in Marlin, Texas

On one of our road trips, we found this scene… the bluebonnets were actually growing up through a crack in the sidewalk in front of this post office..

Accepted Into Juried Art Show: Gas $1.08

I recently entered my first juried art show and I was notified this afternoon that the piece above, titled Gas $1.08 has been accepted into the show. Only about 20% of submitted work was accepted into this show, so it is a huge honor (not to mention really exciting).

This image is printed on a fine art metal medium available from my pro lab. The printing process starts with a layer of white ink to the surface of a 1”-deep brushed aluminum box. The image is then printed on top of the white base coat. It really is a beautiful process and makes this art piece really shine.

There is an artists’ reception this Friday night that is open to the public, feel free to drop by!

Visual Image Fine Art Publishing invites you to the Reception to view the work on exhibit this month.

“Photography & Digital Art Exhibition”
Visual Image Fine Art Publishing
14320 Midway Rd, Suite. #300 (behind OK Paper corner of Proton & Midway – more directions below)
Dallas, TX 75244

Friday night, April 16th, 2010 – 5:30 P.M. to 9:00 P.M.

Featured photographer, Steve Wheeler.

Kay Kallos, Public Art Manager, City of Dallas, Office of Cultural Affairs juried the show.

Many of the artists & photographers will be in attendance to talk about their work.

Visual Image is fairly easy to find. Take Midway to Proton. Proton is a light there and is north of Spring Valley and south of Beltline. If you turn east on Proton from Midway and look right, there is a building at that corner. OK Paper is in the front of the building and Visual Image is at the back – and it faces Proton.

Hope to see you there!

North Texas Barn

Its been so beautiful here lately, we’ve started looking for potential bluebonnet locations (I’ve got a bluebonnet mini-session special that I’m starting to book, contact me for more details.)

Found this barn on our wanderings.. still in use, of course.. I think they get used until they fall over.

New Treatment on Archive Photo

I went looking for this photo in my archive and didn’t like the treatment I’d given it several years ago, so I wanted to revamp it for my Back Roads, Texas series. The history behind this old bank building must be fascinating…

Road Trip! (New Images for My Texas Series)

Took a drive the other day.. the old gas station in the first few was the real target, but we stopped along the way to grab some of these others that will go in the new, revamped Texas series soon..

And proof that angle and treatment can make all the difference …

Hugging the Heavens II

One year ago, I was preparing to meet another photographer to talk about her second shooting a wedding with me. My wife woke up with a the same nagging cough and shoulder pain that had plagued her for a couple months and decided to stay home from work. Almost on a whim, she went with me to McKinney that day.. and on another last minute decision, we got in to see a new doctor, one who would sit down and listen to the complaints and come up with different suggestions and solutions.

By the end of that day, our lives would change.

A routine x-ray revealed a mass in my wife’s chest. The new doctor (we’ll call him Dr. Wonderful) immediately was thinking it was Lymphoma. More tests and a biopsy the following week would confirm that initial diagnosis. The week after that, she started the first chemotherapy treatment.

I kept much of this out of the blog for the very reason that it was so painful, emotionally and physically. Even still, I’m not going to share details here. But now, one year later, she is cancer free and once again, I find myself Hugging the Heavens.

She came home from a work trip to California yesterday, tired, but still full of life and energy. It was hard not to cry seeing her so vital again. We credit Dr. Wonderful with saving her life, even more so than her oncologist (who we try not to refer to at all.. while competent, he was a major jerk.. we have another name for him that isn’t appropriate for this blog).

We’re happy and healthy again. Dr. Wonderful will continue to monitor both of our states of health and I couldn’t be happier with that.

To anyone touched by cancer, Love to you. Keep up Hope. Those are your best weapons.

Me, this is the last time I plan to talk about cancer on this blog.
